Matt, I've thought about that, but I actually don't care for the elliptical machines. I don't like the way they feel, and somehow they seem more tedious. Of course, the big thing is that they cost money. :\

Rebekah, my shoes are probably not great for running (they're not especially new, and I've definitely walked in them), but I'm running on a treadmill (which avoids the frozen snot problem), so I would expect it to do a fair job of cushioning. I really don't understand why it's just my right foot, either. It's kind of weird. I wonder if I'm stepping differently on that foot.

Thanks for the input, guys.

Also, how are your shoes? They should be replaced every 300 to 700 miles. I've also been told that you should have a pair of running shoes that aren't walked in since you use your feet differently doing each. Obviously you have to walk in them some, but limited, I guess. You should go to the doctor, hurting sucks.

Speaking of running, it was 2 degrees this morning when I went out. Snot can freeze, BTW. Brrrr.

You might consider investing in a combo elliptical machine or so. One of those that you use a running motion but never lift your feet; they also make some that work your arms with your legs. You can adjust the difficulty to get your complete cardio workout without the nasty side effects running causes, like feet and joint problems, as you have discovered.
